Provincial Local Economic Development Support Programme
Programme Objectives The overall objective of this Thina Sinako Local Economic Development (LED) Support Programme is the following:

A significant reduction in the number of households living below the poverty line.

The Project Purpose is as follows:
The creation of significant levels of sustainable employment (including self-employment) in the Eastern Cape, especially for historically disadvantaged individuals.

The specific targets that have been set for the Programme reflect the fact that this Programme, on its own, cannot significantly reduce poverty and unemployment. Rather, the value of this Programme lies in its support of the larger Provincial Growth and Development Plan 2004-2014 (PGDP), which, amongst others, sets the following 2014 targets for the Province of the Eastern Cape: reducing by between 60-80% the number of households living below the poverty line, halving unemployment, and eliminating gender disparities.

In supporting the PGDP, the Thina Sinako Provincial LED Support Programme aims to stimulate innovation in how LED is promoted, facilitated and supported. This it does through competitive grant funding, active learning, and dedicated technical support partnered with counterparts in provincial and local government institutions.

Why LED?

Local economic development (LED) means working directly to build up the economic capacity of a local area to improve its economic future and the quality of life for all. LED involves local government, the private sector, non-governmental organisations and the local community working collectively to create better conditions for economic growth and employment generation in the local area.

The Thina Sinako Provincial LED Support Programme aims to be a catalyst of economic development in all parts of our Province by funding innovative initiatives that strengthen all of some of these role players, and by capturing learning by those initiatives.

The Programme integrates the work of key government departments and parastatals, actively seeks to partner and strengthen municipalities, and mobilises technical support and finance.
